Filler words: what actually helps

Removing every “um” is the wrong goal. Learn when fillers matter and how deliberate pauses change delivery.

Filler words are normal. They become distracting when they cluster around every transition or hide uncertainty in your message.

Replace speed with intention

Most filler-word advice focuses on suppression. A better approach is to slow the transition between ideas and let silence do the work. A brief pause sounds confident; a hurried chain of fillers does not.

Measure patterns, not perfection

Track where fillers appear. Openings and transitions are common hotspots. Practice those moments separately, then return to the full answer.
